Indie Artist Showcase

The 2010 Spirit West Coast Festivals in Del Mar and Monterey are once again teaming with other major festivals in the nationwide Christian Festival Association to present the “Spirit West Coast Talent Search & Showcase" presented by Word Records, an online talent search competition and showcase that culminates at the Spirit West Coast 2010 festivals with a live performance competition between the finalists chosen.

Initial judging of the online submission will be done by a panel of leaders associated with SWC. All submissions will be electronic and will go through Sonicbids (www.sonicbids.com), the facilitator of the Indie Artist Showcase. Submissions for the Monterey event must be received by April 21, 210.

For the finalists, the final showcase and competition will be held at the festival and will be open to the public. All finalists will be listed in the on site event program. Each finalist will be given 10 minutes - enough time for 2 songs. Backline gear will be provided and contestants are required to use only what is available (special gear will not be allowed).

The Grand Prize Winner and Runner-up from the finals will be given the opportunity to perform 2 songs on the Main or Alternative Stage (festival’s choice of stage based on style). The Del Mar Grand Prize winner will be recognized in the 70,000 SWC bi-monthly eBlast and the Monterey program.

The Grand Prize Winner will also be invited to perform at the national talent search finals in Nashville later this year. The winner will be responsible for all costs associated with traveling to the finals in Nashville. The national winner will receive a development contract with Word Records.

Submissions will be rated based on the following:

Artistically Excellent: The Body of Christ is called by God to be excellent (1 Thessalonians 4:1). The standards for artistic quality are, therefore, consistent with this expectation.
Scripturally Sound: While people should not require or expect the lyrics of our artists’ music to be taken from scripture, it is expected that all messages are consistent with God’s Word and are encouraging to people's lives.

Please note: Finalists/ entrants will not be allowed to sell merchandise on site and will be responsible for all their costs associated with getting to and from the festival including transportation, meals and lodging (camping is available at the regular price).

Submit to Spirit West Coast and over 10,000 other gig listings through Sonicbids, a matchmaking site where bands can connect with people who book and license music all over the world.

Entry Fee: $90

Partner & Play!

NEW for 2010 will be a program designed to provide indie and emerging artists expanded opportunities to appear and perform AT the festivals: the “Partner & Play” program. Partner & Play is a ticket sales incentive program that will accommodate bands, vocalists and music acts with a performance slot if basic event ticket sales plateaus are reached. In addition to a performance slot, participating artists will receive free event tickets and cash rebates for the tickets they sell.

“Spirit West Coast has always felt a commitment to embrace the emerging artist,” explains event Director Jon Robberson. “From the very beginning in 1997 we’ve had various formats to accommodate indies, but this new program for 2010 takes the performance possibilities to a new level. I’m expecting dozens of bands and indie artists to participate, and it will be a great experience for the artists and a real positive for the festival.”

The “nuts and bolts” of how Partner & Play works are as follows:

1.    To register and enter the program, artists must sell a minimum of 40 single day tickets (or the equivalent in 3-day tickets) to one festival. ONCE the 40 ticket sales number is reached, the artist will be guaranteed a performance slot on the Partner & Play Stage (the stage name will probably be changed for on- site identification). The date and time of performance within the three day event will be coordinated with SWC admin, with priority and date/time choice given to the artists who commit to participating first.

2.    Each performance slot will be 30 minutes in length. In Del Mar the performances will be on days 2 and 3 of the festival, May 29 and 30. In Monterey performances will be all 3 days; July 1-3.

3.    There is no audition process; every band who meets the sales threshold will be allowed to perform IF accepted into the program. Each artist will be required to submit an MP3 of one song online and a photo and bio (if they have them). SWC reserves to right to not accept an artist, but the intention is to provide a very wide stylistic presentation of artists and not get hung-up on the (subjective) quality of the music. Although some artists are more advanced in their abilities than others, all levels of music accomplishment (new or seasoned) will be welcomed into the program.

4.    There is no entry fee to the Partner & Play program. Artists are completely responsible for all their expenses in getting to and from the festival and while at the event (travel cost, lodging, food, etc.)

5.    Each artist who enters the program and meets the minimum ticket sales requirements WILL receive their choice of four (4) single day tickets for FREE, or four (4) three-day tickets for $15 per ticket. A full-price (adult) single-day ticket has a value of approximately $49-$59 and a 3-day ticket is valued at approximately $100 (depending on when purchased). Additionally, each artist will receive another free single-day or $15 three-day ticket for each 10 tickets sold with no limit. Example: a band who sells 60 tickets will get the original 4, plus 2 more.

6.    The ticket sales quantity count will be based on the number of general (type) tickets sold (ages 13 and up). Junior rate priced tickets (ages 6-12) will be available but excluded from the (minimum 40) count but NOT from the rebate. The rebate for each junior ticket sold will be $5 (children 4 and under free).

7.    Money rebated to the artist! Each participating artist will receive a $10 rebate (cash or credit) for each single day ticket sold and $30 for each 3-day ticket sold. Artists can combine the type of tickets they sell (some single day and some three day). If a participating artist sells less than the 40 minimum, thereby failing to secure a performance slot, they will still receive the $10 per ticket rebate.

8.    All performing artists will be listed in the event program and included as part of the event’s advertised programming.

9.    As an additional incentive, the artist who sells the most tickets will be allowed to appear on either the Alternative Stage or the Main Stage (depending on musical style-SWC makes the decision).

More details on the Partner & Play program will be available soon including registration forms. Artist should keep in mind that there is another format that provides indie artist access to Spirit West Coast performances; the Indie Artist Showcase where artists submit songs online with the top dozen chosen to compete live at the festival. Artists can participate in BOTH program formats; Partner & Play participants can also get involved in the Indie Artist Showcase.

Director Robberson further explains that, “…Spirit West Coast is a CHRISTIAN music festival, and ‘Christian music’ consists of many performers and artists, not just the nationally known, radio airplay and top selling acts like Skillet, Third Day and Newsboys. There are hundreds of artists of all types throughout the greater SWC regions of California, Arizona and Nevada, and the new Partner & Play program will provide broader performance access by those artists to the festival than ever before. I’m excited about this new feature for 2010, and I think the festival public will enjoy discovering some very talented artists.”

Interested artists should check the Spirit West Coast web site beginning February 1 for Partner & Play details and entry directions including how the ticket sales feature will function. The Indie Artist Showcase is “up and running” NOW at www.SpiritWestCoast.org, look under “appearing”.

Details about the Del Mar and Monterey festivals, including ticket and camping prices and the lineup, are on the Web site at www.spiritwestcoast.org. Tickets and camping for Del Mar go on sale January 11. Tickets and camping for Monterey go on sale February 6. Tickets are available for the entire three-days or for single days. Tickets for Partner & Play participants can NOT be ordered through the SWC Box Office but will be processed through an online service (details in future info. to follow).

ALL interested artists can contact the SWC office NOW to receive more detailed information and express interest in receiving Partner & Play registration information.
